Skill 1 : Excellent Time Management

Being an accountant means that you will most probably have to deal with multiple clients at the same time. If you are not careful, you might have problems dealing with all of them and you might miss some key details. In addition to that, you might not have time for all of them. Ensuring that you take into account time management will greatly help you when it comes to staying on top of all your client meetings and requests. The ability to control that and work within deadlines will take your very far in your career. Your teammates will thank you for it and your bosses will definitely take notice of you if you are able to juggle all these tasks and finish them on time with good quality output.

When you are an accountant, you will be meeting a lot of clients. If you do not possess the skill that will help you communicate with your clients well, you will not be able to climb the ladder as fast. Being able to communicate well in person or even through text is a very important skill to have. It will ensure that you get your work done. With good communication skills, you work can be done right, fast and you will make your clients happy when you get all the things that they require done the right way.

Good interpersonal skills is useful when it comes to networking. Networking can easily help you find more clients and be able to make new contacts that will prove to be important in the future. Establishing a good first impression isn’t easy but once you get it down, you will be able to easily see all the profits return to you fast.


Skill 3 : Organisation

If you have both communication and time management down, the last thing you need is great organisational skills. This is because when you have a large pool of clients waiting for you from your last networking session, you need to be able to organise them and speak to them to get their details as soon as possible so that you can get started on working with them. If you are not organised, you might mistakenly work on the wrong things for the wrong people.

The portfolios you manage need to be kept up with regularly to see what’s going on. Which files need to be handled on which dates. If you miss any of your appointments, the client will probably get angry and this is not a good look for anyone.

Make use of your notepads or to-do lists so that you can stay on top of things. Apps like Evernote or the Notes app on the iPhone are great for lists and reminders. You don’t have to spend a bomb or spend hours working on your lists and reminders. Just create them as simple and as understandable as possible so that they get done.
